At Goddard Park PSHE is delivered through the use of Jigsaw. We use Jigsaw resource because it brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development opportunities are mapped throughout. All of these pieces of learning are brought together to form a cohesive picture, helping children to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people the world.
There are 6 Puzzles (half-term units of work) each with 6 Pieces (lessons). Each Piece has two Learning Intentions: one is based on specific PSHE learning (covering the non-statutory national framework for PSHE Education but enhanced to address children’s needs today); and one is based on emotional literacy and social skills (covering the SEAL learning intentions, but enhancing them). The enhancements mean that Jigsaw is relevant to children living in today’s world as it helps them understand and be equipped to cope with issues like body image, cyber and homophobic bullying, and internet safety.
Every year group studies the same Puzzle at the same time (sequentially ordered from September to July), allowing for whole school themes, a whole school assembly and the opportunity to share learning throughout the school. Examples of the units are Celebrating Differences which looks at anti-bullying (including cyber-bullying) and Changing Me which includes Sex and Relationships Education in the context of looking at change.
