Speaking & Listening
The ability to speak and listen is fundamental to pupil’s language and social development. It is an essential tool for all areas of the curriculum, as verbal communication underpins learning and thinking. Pupils are provided with many varied contexts for this but they also receive direct teaching in the skills of speaking and listening. Alongside this children are encouraged to perform and read aloud to audiences.
Talk Boost is an interactive class based teaching programme to promote Talk in all instances encouraging children to develop sound oral communication skills which feed into their ability to learn to read and write.
Reading (inc. Phonics programme)
Simply, children learn to read using a synthetic phonic programme called Read Write Inc. Throughout the school children from Foundation Stage 1 through to Year 6 are taught to read with accuracy and fluency to enable them to access the curriculum. Initially, the class learn to read children sounds, blending and decoding strategies. As children make progress, they begin to ‘Read to Learn’ and develop better comprehension skills. Throughout the school we promote a love of reading and children have access to a wide range of high-quality literature, the centre piece of which is our School Library.
Children needing additional support in learning to read also have access to One to One support, Better Reading Partners and Reading Recovery.
Competence in Literacy enables children to communicate effectively at home, at school and in the wider world and leads to improved life opportunities. The skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing enable children to organise and express their own thoughts and to access the knowledge and ideas of others.
We provide a wide variety of reasons and purposes for writing which builds on the child initiated and role-play writing skills developed in Early Years.
We teach writing following the Goddard Park Writing Curriculum, incorporating the ‘Talk for Writing’ principles.
There are regular planned opportunities for: planning writing, modelled writing, shared writing, supported composition and guided writing. The children experience a range of text types, both written and digital. We provide regular opportunities for children’s writing to be shared, displayed, published and celebrated.
Pupils are given opportunities to:
- Express personal thoughts, feelings and ideas through discussion, responding to texts and through writing.
- Understand human feelings (eg hopes and fears) through stories and drama.
- Reflect on issues raised in text (eg relationships and moral dilemmas).
- Experience and share a sense of wonder through the beauty of language used in poetry, literature and the spoken word.
Accurate spelling and grammar is taught. It is an essential skill that develops the fluency and accuracy of writing in all its forms. Children are given spellings to practise and learn at home as part of weekly homework alongside the requirement to be reading regularly at home.
Handwriting is taught from the Foundation Stage. The development of fine motor skills through creative play and focused tasks leads to mark making, letter formation and good pencil grip. We then introduce a fully cursive handwriting style. Children will receive a special pen and handwriting pen licence when their writing has developed into a clear, fluent, cursive style.
